ISEA2010 RUHR is the 16th International Symposium on Electronic Art, a major biennial conference and exhibition event for art, media and technology, scheduled for August 2010 in the German Ruhr region (Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg, a. o.).

Database visualization, Mapping and Cartographies. Genealogy of space. Visual representation for knowledge in art.

Art and technology awareness in new media use from the 1989 Cold War end, symbolizing the Analogue to Digital system conversion, the industrial mode of production to contemporary. It implies the Dominion of public social space (surveillance) or the impact in landscapes, among many others. Cartography is a system of visual representation of knowledge to display in Exhibitions in contemporary art solving problems to society in Ethics and Value.

Genealogy of space refers to electronic media in Postmodern Lyotard’ Posthistory concept as the end of narrative, history, religion and patriarchate. The Hierarchy of Spaces initiated by Foucault with Panoptic and Heterotopia, continues with non-site, Atopia, Distopia, Utopia, the permanent site of power, TAAZ  Temporal Autonomous Zone and Borders. All physical or non-physical spaces are conceptualized in an embodied/disembodied effect on the subject. Psycogeography is a system of representation giving solutions as the Heterocronos Real time live and the approximation to Art/live performance in Media Art Histories. The deconstruction in dada Objecthood and the meaning of surrealist images make contemporary Cinematic Visual Era exemplified in Stalker, Tarkovski in the cave.

Art as Visual representation of Knowledge.  The strategies of visualization and representation used in art are affected by Progress, History and Evolution. This implies the Displacement from uniqueness and one vision (the plane earth in modern age) to complex models of visualizing (Buckminster fuller, NASA and aerospace). Those systems from video.art to net.art are representing, communicating and informing. The more significant contribution are Jameson with the Cognitive Mapping and  Buckminster Fuller with the Dymaxion map.  There are also 3 main fileds of classification:

1 DATABASE VISUALIZATION. Displaying information and knowledge. There are about 600 existing models of Database visualizations of information (diagrams, thesaurus, processing, etc…) Examples Ubermorgen, Dirmoser,  Ben Fry .

2 MAPPING. Is based in Interactive visualization of cyberspace flows, in Cybergeography and the density flux of communication networks. It also is based in Mapping the net using clusters, processing and pure data. Examples Antidatamining, Muntadas, Ethan Miller, Warren Sacks.

3 CARTOGRAPHIES. Are nearly too Social mapping, locative media, tactical media, and the cartography as media activism and surveillance city. Using Streams, Broadcast and GISS. Examples GISS Hangar, Goto10, Cartografia Tactica, Pablo de Soto.
